Positive thinking
Been feeling down on my art, and made a post about it on FA about why I haven't drawn in so many months.  I don't like my art.  It's not what I want to draw.  Well, it is, but it's just a pale, pathetic imitation of what I REALLY want to draw...  Most of the time.  And of course the comments were the usual "We love your art" "You're not as bad as you think" "Every artist is their own worst critic" responses.  As expected.  But... I can't be THAT awful, can I?

So I went through my galleries and pulled out the few pieces I actually like, just to remind myself that I actually do succeed sometimes...

Vikky's Badge
My Own Badge
Honey Husky's Badge (though the scan was awful)
Nacha Tokalu's Badge
Maid Marian's Badge (are we seeing a badge theme here?)
Rougia's Pendant
A Dragon's Best Friend (drawn in a flurry of inspiration, I'm afraid to work on it for fear of ruining how much I love it)
...and the picture I submitted for the folio here, which I can't post: http://www.lettersandladies.tk/

NSFW:
Party Animal
Tau & K'sharra (I kinda feel I cheated on this, though, because I used reference...)
Chained Down
The Closeup Series (I don't think I ever finished these...)
Lick It

Yes, out of the hundreds of art pieces, these are the only ones I actually LIKED after I was done.  Yes, I'm sure there are some pieces people liked/loved that I didn't include...  Because *I* don't like them.  They weren't what I wanted to put on paper.  They're nice and all, but they don't have the soul / detail / proportions / look and feel that I was going for, so I'm sorely disappointed in the end result.

Maybe eventually I'll draw again.

Get up, dust yourself off, and keep going.

First off, welcome to being an artist. Part of the challenge is teaching yourself to accurately depict what you feel and see in your head. It's hard, but you have more ability than most artists and you'll only get better the more you do it.

That's the secret really, keep doing it, and you'll get better. Have you tried working with traditional media? I know you usually work digitally, but have a brush in your hand might work better for you, if working in paint is what you want to do, rather than colored pencil or pastel. (You think you're having trouble now, try creating something decent in pastel. It's hell to work with.)

*hugs* Don't stop drawing. You were the reason I became interested in furry art, and I'd hate to see you stop. Yes, there's only so many ways the body can bend, but start experimenting with viewpoints as well. And I don't just mean the adult stuff.

Back to a professional viewpoint...

On the subject of reference? So what? Michelangelo used reference. Does it make him less of an artist? Hardly. Using reference doesn't make you bad. I had to work for YEARS at the human figure to be able to pull anything decent out of my head and have my anatomy teacher go "Very nice.". It's not easy. I still have a lot of work to do.

Also, you're not alone in this feeling. EVERY artist can only pick a few favorites out of their pieces until they've been doing it for twenty years.

A lot of times with art, it doesn't come out the way you want it. I find that extremely frustrating myself, but I notice, each time, I get a little closer to what I want. I'm hoping that with time and effort, I won't be "a little closer", I'll be "there."

Don't stop what you're doing K'sharra. If for no one but yourself. *hugs*

And if you're feeling up to it, I'd like to ask for an art trade. :3
